Cold-plastic (two-component) road markings based on methyl methacrylate - MMA are the durable end of the line-marking market: thick, hard-wearing, and able to carry glass beads for retro reflectivity. Unlike thermoplastic markings that need melting, cold-plastic marking cures chemically, right where it's laid - and the component that triggers that cure is benzoyl peroxide 50%.

Where BPO Fits in the System

An MMA cold-plastic marking arrives as two parts:

  • The resin base (the MMA binder, pigment, fillers and glass beads)
  • The hardener - benzoyl peroxide, typically the 50% powder grade

The crew mixes a measured dose of hardener into the base immediately before applying it.

The peroxide releases free radicals that make the MMA polymerise and set into a tough film. Because the resin carries an accelerator, this happens by Redox system uses without external heating, although ambient temperature still has a major effect on pot life and cure speed.

No heat, no melting kettle.

Why the 50% Grade

Road marking is applied by hand and by machine, often in poor conditions, so the hardener has to hit a balance:

  • Reactive enough to set fast
  • Stable enough to dose safely

BPO 50% powder sits in that window - enough active content to drive a quick cure at a manageable dosing weight.

Dose is usually a low single-digit percentage of the base, but it always follows the marking system's own formulation.

Temperature shifts pot life, so crews adjust for a hot afternoon versus a cold morning.
